This Wills Week is a good reminder to make or update your will and record your wishes for your loved ones – pets included, so the people you trust know exactly how you want them to be cared for.
We meticulously organise grain-free meals into labelled containers, picked the perfect raincoat and set up automated water fountains. Why? Because pets are family, but without a plan their future can be uncertain.
While many people assume a friend or family member will step in, the reality is not everyone is in a position to take on a pet.
In New Zealand, pets are treated as property under the law. That means you cannot leave money or assets directly to your pet. But you can leave your pet to someone you trust in your will, along with funds to support their care, and set out how you’d like them looked after in a statement of wishes.
A little planning now can help ensure your pet is looked after in the way you would want, giving you peace of mind for their future.
In your will you can name a trusted person you’d like to take on the care of your pets.
What matters most is choosing someone you trust to act in their best interests. Choose a primary guardian (friend, whānau member or other trusted person), as well as a backup if circumstances change.
A statement of wishes is a document that can accompany your will. It’s a way to help you hand over special care instructions for your pet, leave personal message to loved ones and explain your instructions in your will.
This July, make or update your will with Public Trust and receive a free statement of wishes (valued at $45). Terms and conditions apply.
